It’s understood that filmmakers jumping all over Wall Street and the economic woes of modern America was going to happen, and it’s especially understood that Oliver Stone, the untalented opportunist he has become, was going to jump all over it. I groaned when I heard of Wall Street 2 (now titled Money Never Sleeps) existing, as it seems like he’s pulling another W., a rushed, mediocre attempt to strike while the iron is hot, which after stuff like World Trade Center and Alexander, just isn’t cutting it for me. Then I saw the cast of Shia Labeouf (ew), Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Carey Mulligan, Frank Langella, Susan Sarandon, and Michael Douglas back in his role of roles, bringing me a bit of hope. Turns out this movie is going to be a shit sandwich after all.
A.O. Scott said a few months ago “While Wall Street was intended as a cautionary tale, it has since turned into — i.e., become regarded as — one of the most enjoyable and effective advertisements for capitalism ever made.” in a video essay about the film. Nikki Finke reported the synopsis: “Shia is a young Wall Street trader who’s engaged to be married to Gekko’s estranged daughter. Shia wants to be a major player, but his mentor unexpectedly kills himself, and Shia thinks a stock-shorting worldwide hedge fund manager is responsible. Shia seeks revenge on this villain, to be played by No Country For Old Men Supporting Actor Oscar-winner Javier Bardem. “So Shia goes to Gordon saying, ‘I need your help’, and makes a Faustian deal with Gekko who in return wants Shia’s help getting back with the daughter (Carey Mulligan). From then on, it’s ‘antagonism’ for everyone.”
Yeah, this sounds like uninteresting retread happy hour of suckitude.
