Matt Shapiro, creator of 2008: The Cinescape has started a website of particular significance. A documentary series on South Africa, more specifically the AIDS/HIV crisis, Retroviral Videos (clever title, eh) is currently updating regularly with 2-5 minute long videos that I have to say, have quite a bit of visual flair. I expect these to end up going viral, pun intended, eventually, much like his cinescapes do, and boy do they deserve it. The level of courage shown in the faces of the people profiled are just amazing, and it’s stuff that really should be seen by everyone.
The site is retroviralvideos.com, which is still under some construction, and not all of the videos have been uploaded, but it’s worth checking out and bookmarking. Shapiro’s definitely an indie documentarian/filmmaker to watch for.
