I didn’t really plan on doing a post about the death of legendary filmmaker John Hughes, the filmmaker who put the face on the 1980s teen comedy, as everyone else reports it, and there isn’t much to say on the topic more than the simple facts of the matter. But Hughes is a bit different in such a case, because his death has brought on lots of stuff that I wasn’t previously aware of that is quite fascinating. The man never did interviews and was altogether a recluse, just dropping off the surface after Curly Sue and Home Alone, and that was always something I wondered about, and a 46-minute interview with the AFI he did, and a trailer for a John Hughes documentary, both unearthed today, to me anyway, both filled me up with quite a bit of __________. The interview, courtesy of the American Film Institute, is two parts and features him being interviewed by AFI members talking about all sorts of things that are all very interesting coming from Hughes’ mouth, like his relationship with studio suits and anything else one might wonder about his very one-of-a-kind career in cinema.

Another thing worth noting is the trailer for indie doc Don’t You Forget About Me, which four filmmakers tried to find Hughes and interview him, and while they didn’t, they got a huge list of names involved with the film, including Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Justin Henry, Gedde Watanabe, John Kapelos, Annie Potts, Kelly Lebrock, Andrew McCarthy, Mia Sara, Alan Ruck, Kevin Smith, Jason Retiman, and Roger Ebert. The film has no release date or distributor, but I’m sure that’s going to change very soon now.
