Paul Weitz’ upcoming adaptation of the popular book series Cirque du Freak just screams of mismanagement now, without any signs of it before. Why, do you ask? You don’t change the name of a popular book series to something this bland, and every time it’s happened, it’s resulted in an epic bomb (The Dark is Rising, anyone?)

I liked the book when I read it pretty long ago, and the cast is certainly attractive, John C. Reilly, Willem Dafoe, Salma Hayek, etc. But come on here, this is a popular book, the title isn’t too alienating for audiences and you just can’t sell something called The Vampire’s Assistant. And since Eclipse, the third Twilight piece of crap will already be coming out on DVD, the vampire fad will probably be over. This is just…hilariously disastrous. There’s just no reason that works for this one.

EDIT: I just remembered that The Vampire’s Assistant is the subtitle to the second book, which is a semi-excuse to do this. But…it’s an adaptation of the first book, or a merge of the two. Still, it only works as a subtitle.
