OH NO, they’re recasting Futurama?

Author: Sterling Heltzel | Filed under: Uncategorized

Guys at Forces of Geek are reporting something that’s incredibly disheartening, shocking, and most of all, just pathetic. As Futurama prepares to relaunch the series on Comedy Central, Fox plans to recast John DiMaggio, Phil LaMarr, Maurice LaMarche, Billy West and Katy Sagal with cheaper imitations to keep budgets down.

This is a ridiculous notion of course, considering how much the voice work is important to the show working as a whole. I’m just going to blame it on The Simpsons voice actors for demanding those big hefty raises when the show wasn’t doing so hot anymore, ruining it for everyone else. This really is just putting a huge damper upon my anticipation for a new season of Futurama, as I agree with Forces of Geek that it now seems like it’s just pushing out a product instead of a quality piece of programming.

But if Fox wants to recast, go them. If they want to jeopardize the show? Go them. But if they do, if anyone at Fox ever reads it, may I suggest Alex Weitzman? He’ll do it for cheap, and he’s quite the voice actor. Hippie haiku, brother trucker.

Um, the fact that you could consider involving an animated sitcom “incredibly disheartening, shocking, and most of all, just pathetic,” is pretty sad.

I didn’t know whether to give this a high rating because I enjoyed the information, or to give it the lowest rating because that is completely fucking ridiculous. It’ll never be the same. =(

Futurama has some of the greatest voice-over work in any American animated series/film. If this recasting actually occurs, Fox is potentially destroying the series before it even gets a chance to return. Fans will be alienated/outraged, many will probably refuse to watch it (depending on the quality of these imitations). Awful, awful news. I can only hope for the best.
