I’m frighteningly optimistic about the Straw Dogs remake.

When we all first heard that Screen Gems was planning to remake the classic Sam Peckinpah film Straw Dogs, many were pretty angry. My worries only slightly lessened when Rod Lurie (Nothing But the Truth, Resurrecting the Champ) was attached to direct and James Marsden was set to star in the flick. But now, I’m safe to say that I don’t expect this to be terrible. Pale to the original? Almost certainly. But Lurie isn’t one to take a paycheck, and this will hopefully work as its own film and not just a shameless remake of a much better film, but now I’m pretty convinced that it will be.
The reason I made this post anyway sits with the recent sign-ons of Kate Bosworth (21) and Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood) as the two supporting leads, which continues to make things more…interesting. Who knows how the hell it could possibly turn out, but that’s where most of the optimism on my part comes from. It went from a surefire dud to one hell of a good wildcard, which is an awesome prospect just about always.
It also helps that I like James Marsden, who has made quite a colorful career for himself in the wide range of roles he’s taken on while being great in just about all of them. With this and Richard Kelly’s The Box coming up, I’m excited for where this all takes him, as he’s one of the few actors who I really want to see take off before it’s too late, and have for quite a while.
The film is scheduled to release August 13th, 2010.

Hm. Never took you for a Marsden fan. I approve.
