One of my really good friends, name redacted by me just because I can, and just because I wanted to use the opportunity to call him “My Hollywood Jew Lover”. Anyway, with my 12 hours on AIM a day (sadly meshing with the fact that I tend to be up in 12 hour intervals during the summer season) tend to lead to a lot of quality AIM excerpts. This one happened to be better than most.
We tend to share movie recommendations on a regular basis and we recently had a conversation about whether or not he should watch Bill Maher’s 2008 documentary-ish Religulous, in which I told him that it was a good, not great, explanation of the topic at hand: Why do people believe in a religion, however ridiculous it may be? While Maher’s schtick on his show Real Time on HBO tends to paint a negative and one-sided stance on religion, his film is much more fair than one would expect from Maher. It isn’t misleadingly edited and it doesn’t focus entirely upon unwitting fools to make a point (unlike Ben Stein’s horrifyingly abysmal creationist-doc Expelled, which I will not bold because it merely just doesn’t deserve to be recognized by me as a film.) It’s enjoyable but also very informative in regards to the discussion the film brings up between its subjects.
The film brought HJF and I to a discussion point about a friend, and well, here we go.
(12:22:21 AM) My Hollywood Jew Lover: i went to this camp a couple years ago and one of the kids i met there was this kid from New Mexico
(12:22:46 AM) My Hollywood Jew Lover: he was really nice, in fact he was my best friend for those three weeks
(12:22:56 AM) Me: that tends to happen at camp
(12:22:58 AM) My Hollywood Jew Lover: mhm
(12:23:05 AM) My Hollywood Jew Lover: so one day we were talking about religion
(12:23:07 AM) My Hollywood Jew Lover: like in a group
(12:23:24 AM) My Hollywood Jew Lover: and he says that he’d never met any jewish people before, because there are none where he lives and he doesnt travel much
(12:23:31 AM) My Hollywood Jew Lover: again, he’s about as nice a kid as you’ll meet
(12:23:44 AM) My Hollywood Jew Lover: so then he asks me, exact quotes
(12:24:03 AM) My Hollywood Jew Lover: completely serious, no attempt to be mean, straight faced
(12:24:12 AM) My Hollywood Jew Lover: “How old were you when you got your horns removed?”
(12:24:57 AM) Me: …
(12:25:10 AM) Me: Religion: Where common sense and knowledge of simple facts goes out the window.
(12:25:21 AM) My Hollywood Jew Lover: yup
(12:25:28 AM) Me: I thought it was a given that in a modern society, people knew that humans can’t grow horns.
(12:25:32 AM) My Hollywood Jew Lover: and i couldnt even… i couldnt even get angry at him
(12:25:32 AM) Me: Guess not.
(12:25:40 AM) My Hollywood Jew Lover: because it wasnt him being a dick
(12:25:44 AM) My Hollywood Jew Lover: it was religion being that fucked up
(12:25:52 AM) Me: I did a spittake.
(12:25:54 AM) Me: I hope you know that.

That’s classic when Borat shouts at the children to smash the Jew egg before it hatches.
Poor jews never get a flattering stereotype
