David Gordon Green’s making another comedy. Dammit.

A lot of you liked Pineapple Express, I was pretty lukewarm on it, but it goes without saying that David Gordon Green is one awesome and far under appreciated filmmaker. All the Real Girls, George Washington, Undertow, and Snow Angels are all four really great films, but went very underseen and made next to no money. All that considered, I can’t say I’m pleased with the existence of Your Highness, his next film for Universal, starring Danny McBride as an arrogant prince who must save his father’s kingdom. James Franco is attached to play his heroic brother and Zooey Deschanel to play his virginal wife.
Of course, we don’t know more than just premise, but it sounds…lazy. I’m sure I’ll like it, but if this is the path that’s being taken, well, I’m going to look fondly on his early canon, I think.

I just stumbled upon this today although on imdb says that it’s Natalie Portman, not Zooey. I trust imdb with the lives of my children, so I’m assuming they’re correct. Either way, it’s obviously a horrible premise and title, but at least James Franco is doing more comedy. It is a shame to see Green waste his time on ‘green comedy’, but maybe at some point he’ll take it up a couple levels. Probably not this one. Hooray for forgettable comedies!?

The Hollywood Reporter’s article says that Zooey is REPLACING Portman.

Actually, Natalie Portman is still in it as a “warrior princess” that McBride’s character falls for, and Zooey Deschanel’s character is Franco’s character’s “virginal bride.”

Green basically said that he burnt himself out after Snow Angels, and was essentially depressed after making so many “serious” films, so he wanted to take a break for a while. I’m hoping that break ends sooner rather than later.
Pineapple Express has grown on me, but it’s still only average.
